Cllr Roger Hutchinson started his working life as an electrician with British Rail after serving a 5 year apprenticeship at the Carriage and Wagon Works in Wolverton, Milton Keynes.  He moved on to work at the Head Office of the Engineering Union for 10 years, before becoming a Labour Party Regional Official for 22 years first in the South East and then in the South West.

 

His work in local government started with his election to Bucks County Council in 1969 and then Wolverton Urban District Council, which was merged into Milton Keynes Borough Council.  He lost his seat on Bucks in 1976 and resigned from MK in 1982 to take up a position with the Labour Party.  His local government career re-started with election to the new unitary authority of South Gloucestershire in 1995 and to Filton Town Council in the same year.  He is currently Leader of the Labour Group and was a Deputy Leader of the Council 2003 to 2007 in its period of a 3 party administration.

 

He is currently a

- Governor of Filton FE College

- Member of the West of England Partnership Board

- Chair of the South West Councils (previously the Regional Local Govn. Association)

- Member of the South West Regional Assembly - Chair of the Regional Strategic Partnership Board on Migration

and he represents the region on the Regional Economic Council.
