Councillor Ruth Davis

Cllr Ruth Davis trained as an insurance underwriter in the London and later swapped to insurance accounts work and works for a national broker, Jelf’s, whose head office is in Yate. In her spare time she qualified as a part-time youth leader, running Wickwar Youth Club, taught music as well as being a governor on a local school, where she was chair for many years. She has lived in Yate since 1973

Ruth became interested in politics when she became involved with saving a local common from development. She was elected to Northavon District Council as a Liberal Democrat in 1991 and was immediately involved with setting up an inward investment company for the Avon area and was a company director for Northavon on this, the local branch of Businesslink and the West of England Development Agency. She became vice chairman and then chairman of the Western Development Partnership.

When South Gloucestershire Council was formed Ruth became Education spokesperson, followed by executive member for Corporate and then Traded Services and eventually was made leader of the Liberal Democrat group. She was leader of council and chair of the Local Strategic Partnership from 2005 to 2007. She was also a member of the regional assembly and the West of England Partnership.
