Avon and Somerset Police is inviting members of the public to join the Citizens’ Academy, a new and an innovative way to experience first-hand the day to day workings of the police.
The 10 week programme will offer a selected group of people exceptional insight into policing in Avon and Somerset – from understanding different police roles such as forensic investigation, the use of firearms and internet safety – to getting a glimpse into the challenges we face from different crimes, including domestic abuse and hate crime.
Attendees will visit the police control room where 999 and 101 calls are received, and custody, as well as take part with officers on patrol on a ‘Ride-along’.
Superintendent Simon Ellis, Head of Local Policing said: “If you are interested in policing and how you can positively support the work of the police, the Citizens’ Academy is a great opportunity to understand more about what we do and why we do it.
“We hope that Citizens’ Academy graduates will pass on their experiences and increased knowledge to the community and will be inspired to become a new generation of citizen leaders, working alongside us as part of a Neighbourhood Watch or an Independent Advisory Group”.
Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “The Citizens’ Academy is a great opportunity for local people from different communities, backgrounds and with different life experiences, to gain a better insight into policing.
“Our hope is that the Academy will give local people first-hand experiences into the policing service; what it’s like to be an officer, what it’s like to investigate a crime and the challenges experienced daily by the police across Avon and Somerset.
“There will also be the opportunity to get involved with some of our volunteer programmes and see how you can support your community in being safe and feeling safe. If all of this appeals to you, I’d encourage you to apply to the Academy.”
The first Academy programme is open for up to 25 people and will run every Wednesday evening from 6.30pm – 8.30pm starting on 14 September at Portishead Headquarters. Attendees who complete the programme will graduate from the Citizens’ Academy at a formal ceremony.
